Candle Soot ruining carpet...HELP?

Hello, does anyone know how to get the black stuff (soot) that comes from a candles wick out of carpet?? My 4 yr old took a candle off my dresser (not lit of course) and all the black stuff dropped on the carpet. I tried cleaning a spot up w/the carpet stain remover I normally use and it just smeared it into a bigger spot. i also got the hand vac out and got up all loose pieces, bu the rest are imbedded. This stuff is stubborn and I have almost white carpet. I don't wanna ruin anymore areas, so any help is appreciated!!
