Leaving the country--got advice/info?

I am seriously considering leaving the US for a few years to gain insight into the ways of life in other large countries. Do you have any suggestions as to where to go? Is there any way to do this on a VERY small budget (I would work in these countries)? Do you have any other good tidbits of helpful information?
